Infield

:: Short Hop Drill

Objective

Players will practice fielding ground balls during a short hop.

Setup

Players get into pairs of two. Both will stand about 10 feet apart and assume a fielding position. One player starts with a ball.


Procedure
1. While both players are in a fielding position the player with the ball will toss it in a dart like motion so that the ball bounces one to two feet in front of the players glove.
2. The receiving player will catch the ball alligator style being sure to keep the glove on the ground and immediately bring the ball up to the short arm position. (By the ear)
3.

Player will then toss the ball back to the player in the same manner that they received it.

4. Repeat 10 to 20 times and then switch partners.
     
 
Coaching Tips

It's important to focus on proper fielding position in this drill. Fielder should start the drill in the position and remain stationary during the drill.

Proper position is : Feet shoulder width apart, rear end down, and glove out in front on the ground.
