Drill of the Month

:: Drop Step Drill

Objective
Players will learn the proper footwork when preparing to catch a fly ball.
Setup
Players line up in the outfield about 5 yards from the coach. Each player will have a ball.
Procedure

1. Coach is given a ball by the player, while the player stnds in front of the coach in ready position. The coach will point in one direction. (Right or left)
2. Player drop steps in that direction. A drop step is nothing more than the player turning their body 90 degrees from the starting position in a quick motion.
3. After the initial drop step the player will run straight back away form the coach who will throw the ball in the air to simulate a fly ball.
4. Player will position their body BEHIND the ball and catch the ball over their head on their throwing side.
5. As the player is in the process of catching the ball they will move slightly forward towards the direction that they plan on throwing the ball in order to get momentum behind their throw.

Coaching Tips
  • Coaches should remind their players that the first step when a fly ball is hit is always back while the fielder judges the ball.
  • Catching the ball on the throwing side allows the fielder to be in a better throwng position.
  • Remind players that the spin on a hard hit ball will tend to cause it curl towards the foul line, and to plan their route accordingly.
